Food on the road: Falafels in Paris
Le Marais (which in English means “The Marsh”) is an historic district in Paris. While long was the aristocratic district of Paris and later on became a popular commercially active area, hosting one of Paris’ main Jewish community, it is now a vibrant fashionable district, home to many trendy restaurants, fashion houses and one of Paris’ main localization for hype art galleries.
In a few words the Marais is an amalgamation of all that makes Paris the melting-pot that is today. The area is old and new at the same time: trendy and traditional. There are Michelin-starred restaurants just next to kosher bakeries, and Hasidic Jews share the same buildings with famous gay-fashion designers.
Le Marais is all of these and also something you wouldn’t expect from an area of Paris, as it has now become also a must-go tourist destination for a particular food, a food that you might not expect to find in Paris: falafel sandwiches!
This video shows a tipical afternoon outside of L’As du Falafel – The most famous falafel to take away in rue des Rosiers:
So next time you are in Paris don’t forget to go for a falagel sandwich in Le Marais!
