The environmental impact of food
What to eat is a shot made by Jason Schwartzman that encourages to eat less meat in order to reduce global warming and climate change. He encourages to change small things in our lives to make big improvements in the world. The video shows how changing what we eat can have an impact on the environment.
The shot is an initiative of the environmental NGOs of United States, the Worldwatch Insitute, Food and Water Watch or Farms Sanctuary and it aims to raise the awareness about the power each of us have to get a better world. It shows how eating less meat can reduce the environmental impact of the industrial agriculture and factory farming. Factory farming in all aspects is unsustainable and animal agriculture is responsible for big quantities of green house gas emissions. Everything from fertilizers, the way animals are fed and the transport of millions of animals across borders in all over the world help to pollute the Earth everyday. The shot shows how going vegan can be a big step but also by reducing the consumption of meat can have a big impact in the environment.
The website Platetoplanet talks about the environmental impact on the food and it isa project of the organisation farm sanctuary. It is interesting how they show the aspect of pollution since this is something always overlooked in these cases. Factory farming pollutes a lot and the damages caused by the consumption of meat are summarised in this website. The main ones would be: the effects on global warming, the manure from farm animals that release dangerous gases in the atmosphere, destruction of land in order to feed with meat to a world that consumes everyday more and more meat, the air and water pollution and the inefficiency of the production of crops to feed animals.
So, as you can see, small decisions in our everyday lives can make a huge difference and these differences would be healthier for us and for the environment.
