Biodiversity day and Green Week!
There is a week of celebrations this week!
Today we celebrate biodiversity day! and then next week EU celebrate the Green Week in Brussels.
In the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB), we hope that it will make us reflect of the importance of biodiversity, the lost of species, genes and ecosystems, and its consequences.
This year is dedicated to the forest biodiversity with the topic: International Year of Forests. Thus, it will be more focused on raising awareness on sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests. Everyone interested in forests have the opportunity to raise awareness of the issue and increase practical action. See the different celebrations by countries.
According to the UN news, Ban Ki-moon, the secretary general has spoken about the alarming deforestation and the degradation of woodlands and urged States to implement the recently agreed international treaty on sharing the benefits of the Earth’s genetic resources, including forests and the natural valuables found in them.
Also, the European Union, have launched a 3D facebook page to celebrate this day with the intention of raising awareness on biodiversity and the importance of protecting it.
With regards to the 11th edition of the European Green Week, this year it is focused on raising awareness on resource efficiency and the theme is titled: ” Resource efficiency – using less, living better“. The conference will address the problem of resource scarcity and the challenges presented by constraints on resources. It will also show different strategies to achieve a lower carbon use and more efficient use of resources. It is free of charge and there will be a lot of activities and exhibitions as well throughout the week with the aim of showing the importance of resources such as water, wind, soil or oil in order to meet the targets set for 2020-2050.
